Outside a building is a notice reading 'Southern mayors meeting to fight demands of super city' and from inside the window is heard a voice saying 'The question is, are Aucklanders real New Zealanders?' Southern mayors say they will unite to fight the economic pulling power of the emerging Auckland super city. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said a "comprehensive" South Island grouping was needed in response "to ensure our voice is clearly heard in central government". A meeting of South Island mayors, to discuss forming a new South Island-wide mayoral forum to represent the island's interests in Wellington, was also a priority for early next year, Mr Parker said.
