Description

Entrance gateway to Ebbett Park, Hastings, created from carvings from different Maori buildings. Donated by George Ebbett, an early mayor of Hastings. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber, circa 1930s.

The gateway, created from carvings from different Maori buildings, led to Ebbett House. The house was a Maori meeting house reputed to have been obtained by an officer of the Imperial Army, from its original site possibly in the Upper Waikato area. After his death it was stored in Auckland from where it was bought by George Ebbett in 1917, and resited at Ebbett Park in Hastings.
