Description: Entrance gateway to Ebbett Park, Hastings, created from carvings from different Maori buildings. Donated by George Ebbett, an early mayor of Hastings. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber, circa 1930s. The gateway, created from carvings from different Maori buildings, led to Ebbett House. The house was a Maori meeting house reputed to have been obtained by an officer of the Imperial Army, from its original site possibly in the Upper Waikato area. After his death it was stored in Auckland from where it was bought by George Ebbett in 1917, and resited at Ebbett Park in Hastings. Description: Shows trees (possibly beech trees) and hills in the Maitai Valley with fenced farming areas on the flat land. The scene is in a westerly direction Accompanied by mounted title label: "Sir William Fox / Maitai Valley, Nelson, 1843. / Bought to illustrate Sir William Fox book / [...] Taylor / 1985. The area shown is now now the Maitai Waahi Taakaro Public Golf Course Inscriptions: Backing board recto - centre - [Title] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 237 x 335 mm. Provenance: Previously purchased in about 1940 by Rupert Halls Taylor from George Ebbett of Hastings (1872-1954). Mr Ebbett told Mr Taylor that it was a painting of the Maitai Valley in Nelson, and that he had purchased it directly from the Fox family then living in the Rangitikei district. Watson's Auctions purchased the work from a descendant of Rupert Halls Taylor. (See letter at C.AA.001.006.004, 30 May 2005). The work was also on sale at Ferner Galleries in 2004.
