Description

Shows R J Seddon dressed as a cow cocky dancing at a reception at Buckingham Palace before King Edward VII, Sir Joseph Chamberlain, and other notabilities. Many courtiers are streaming out of an exit marked 'Escape Door' at the back and all are looking horrified. Seddon is performing a haka, and mouthing random Maori words

The Kumara of the title was viewed as the archetypical hick town. The published version of this drawing includes the text: 'At a reception held at Buckingham Palace, Mr Seddon again gave an exhibition ... his chef d'oeuvre - The Digger's Dance, in full West Coast costume ... The guests stood transfixed, spellbound.'

Exhibited in 'The Line-Up' exhibition of 36 cartoons by 36 cartoonists curated by the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library auditorium foyer from 5 April 2002 to mark the tenth anniversary of establishment of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive.
