- Description
Prime Minister, John Key and Co-leader of the Maori Party, Tariana Turia, are shown breaking eggs, that represent taxpayers, into a pan to make an 'ETS omelette. Refers to the deal that the government made with the Maori Party. The deal was stitched up without the Labour Party and has resulted in taxpayers subsidizing big business and farmers for the next four years. The deal between the two parties provides that the new emissions trading scheme (ETS) will halve the cost of energy increases to consumers but polluting industries will have an easier ride and longer to adjust through taxpayer subsidies. Climate Change Minister Nick Smith said the changes would reduce the impact on households and businesses that the current ETS would have caused. Labour leader, Phil Goff said that National's deal meant it had lost the opportunity for stable, long term climate change policy with bi-partisan agreement, he said.
