Description

Cook and his sailors in a rowboat, with Cook about to step ashore, being met by a friendly group of local people. The Resolution and Adventure can be seen moored in the distance to the left. There is a Tongan dwelling on top of a low hill to the right, and coconut palms and other vegetation surround the group of Tongans

Based on an oil painting done in August 1774 by William Hodges, artist on Cook's 2nd circumnavigation. The painting is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England

Middleburgh was the name Cook gave to Eua in Tonga. The name did not last
