- Description
Head and shoulders three quarters frontal portrait of a Maori man, with full moko, earrings, a greenstone tiki at his neck and a fringed flax cloak.
The name Wanganui Tupe is possibly a confusion on the artist's part with Herewini Tupe of Waikanae, but more probably a mistake for the name Rangitupu. The portrait is actually taken from a photograph by W. H. T. Partington of Rangitupu Taketake, taken in the 1890s and reproduced in Photograms of the year. 1896. p. 57. The photograph is heavily retouched, including the removal of wattles under the chin and highlighting of the moko. Robley has copied the retouched version. The three-quarters angle of the face, the horizontal position of the tiki and the arrangement of the fringe on the cloak are all the same as the photograph.
