Folder one consists of letters, some incomplete, written by Hamilton to his parents during the period 11 April 1844 to 25 Dec 1845. These letters describe Hamilton's experiences as private secretary to Governor FitzRoy, including comments on the fighting in the Bay of Islands, his opinions on the state of New Zealand and news of FitzRoy being recalled in late 1845. Folder two contains; a letter from Charles Clifford dated 25 Aug 1845 to Col Richmond answering questions about the treatment of flax and possible production of flax products, specifically canvas for wool bales; several letters from FitzRoy, one incomplete and undated, to Hamilton, dated 29 July 1846, 12 and 13 Sept 1847 giving news of FitzRoy's activities and comments on Hamilton's career including advice on an opening on the survey vessel the `Acheron' and a letter from Henry John Tancred to Hamilton dated 25 Sept 1871 dealing with local and national politics and economic matters and passing on news of University developments.

Description: Contains letters written by Hamilton to his parents. The letters are dated from 11 April 1844 through to 25 Dec 1845. Some are incomplete. The letters describe Hamilton's time in New Zealand as private secretary to Governor FitzRoy.
