Description

A man, a woman and their son sit watching television and reading the newspaper. The man reads that John Key says he has got an assurance from the Afghan regime that prisoners will not be tortured. The woman expresses relief and the cynical son comments that John Key is already rehearsing his comic lines for the Letterman show. Refers to New Zealand's sending the SAS Group to Afghanistan and also to John Key's visit to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly meeting. He also participated in the body's conference on climate change. While in New York John Key was interviewed by David Letterman for David Letterman's Late Show. Prime Minister John Key received promises from the Afghan Government that prisoners handed over by Kiwi troops will not be tortured, before a detachment of 71 Special Air Service soldiers headed there for combat. The assurance follows claims that prisoners caught by Kiwi SAS troops in 2002 were mistreated after being handed to the Americans, who have since ceded control to the Afghan Government itself accused of torture and atrocities. "I've received verbal assurances from the Afghan Government that anyone that we hand over will be treated humanely and under the Geneva Convention. There's a very clear understanding ..." Mr Key said.
