The title label on the surface of the painting is partly missing, so that the title reads: "Log b ... Coal Creek".

Compare a very similar photograph 'Man and woman standing on a log bridge across Coal Creek, near Greymouth [ca 1903]', photographer William Archer Price, reference number 1/2-000112-G. The painting may be based on another photograph of additional members of the same group. The Library holds other similar but not identical views, including F-009368-1/4, showing a group of four seated men, three standing men and two women and a child on the same bridge, but taken from a closer point from the nearby left bank; also F-009369, showinga group of eight men, a child and two women at Coal Creek mining settlement. In each case, the people are all dressed in their Sunday best and the photographer is William Archer Price.
