- Description
Scene at Waiuta, Inangahua County, which was centred on the Blackwater gold mine. Shows two rows of miners' huts, probably prefabricated. Each of them has a front door, one window, a small verandah in front, and a chimney. Photograph taken by William Archer Price circa 1910.
Formerly identified as Blackwater. Confusion arosed because Waiuta was centred upon the Blackwater gold mine, and was sometimes referred to as Upper Blackwater.
The 'Red Huts' were built circa 1908 by Blackwater Mines Ltd for single workers, and were sold as farm huts etc when the mine, and town, closed in 1951.
