Description: The signature `May Moore' inside front cover, is possibly that of Mrs May Moore (daughter of Sir Joseph Kinsey), who travelled and mountaineered in the areas covered by the album. Album containing 21 scenes of the South Island. Of these, 12 were taken by photographers Muir and Moodie, between 1907 and 1913. The Muir and Moodie numbers for these views are 1810, 6743, 6752, 6780, and 6782 to 6789. The photographer for the other nine images is not identified. 24 leaves are blank. Several of the Muir and Moodie views were taken on 1st January 1913, a number of which show various stages of a group crossing the Haast Pass on horseback. Description: Alpine, bush, valley and mountaineering images taken by various photographers in the South Island. While there is a typescript inventory, many of the sites are unidentified, including images numbered 1-7, 27-141. There are two major sequences, one taken by Edgar Richard Williams (signed ER) when on a trip up the Rakaia River with T.T. Gough in 1917 (information from internet) (image nos. 10-11, 14, 18-26). Some of these have notes on the back added by John Pascoe at a later date. The other main sequence shows an expedition to Mount La Perouse in 1932. This sequence was possibly taken by William D Frazer (from information on internet), although it is possible they were taken by Jack Mitchell (John Wesley Mitchell, Snr). The La Perouse expedition included mountaineers Tom Sheenan, Alex Graham, Marion Scott, Jack Mitchell, Louie Roberts (Mary Louise Roberts), and Anne Stevenson. Images numbered 6-7, show a large group of men, possibly members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, or the New Zealand Alpine Club (either the Canterbury or the Otago branch). John Dobree Pascoe is visible standing in the middle row towards the right. Most or the men are seen in front of a mountain hut, while three men are perched on the roof. The last two images are sterescopes from an "Earthquake series" published by W.S. Smith, showing earthquake damage in San Francisco in 1906. They are No. 317 "Northeast from Fifth Street", and No. 318 "Portsmouth Square". Most of the places identified are listed above. Quantity: 150 b&w original photographic print(s). Camping and mountaineering in Canterbury

Description: Views, mostly snapshots, many of which show a group of eleven men camping in the Cook River area circa 1920s, taken by unidentified photographers. Other images are very clear portraits, but neither the subjects nor the phtographers are identified. The views of the group camping show the men's arrival at the end of the road in buses and cars, prior to their pushing a trailer filled with camping equipment over a stoney river bed to the campsite, tents erected in bush settings, and several different mountain huts including one A-frame hut and two huts identified as the Havelock Hut and Ball Hut. Jack Pattle is identified as the photographer of the Havelock Hut (no. 29); Dr Ebenezer Teichelmann took photograph no. 30 which shows Jack Clarke, Dr Parker, Rev H E Newton and Billy Batson at Ball Hut in 1902 when they made the first crossing of Graham's Saddle in 1902 (identified from copies at the University of Canterbury). Photograph no. 37 shows a cartoon of "Bergschrund Bill" (possibly Bill Batson?). Photographs no. 31, 33, and 46 show a large group of men having a picnic at a mountain hut circa 1920s (possibly members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club); photographs 39, 40, 41 and 47 show men in military uniform about 1941. Nos 40 and 41 show a combimed reunion dinner of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and New Zealand Alpine Club members in the 2NZEF and RAF Middle East Forces, held Saturday July 26, 1941 at Kings Hotel, Cairo, while no. 39 shows an unidentified soldier and no. 47 is inscribed "All good wishes, John Simpson" presumably both members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club or the NZ Alpine Club. Mountain huts and mountaineering in the Southern Alps

Description: Snapshots of mountaineering, camping, and several unidentified mountain huts in the Southern Alps taken by unidentified photographers. The groups are probably members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and/or the New Zealand Alpine Club. Many of the scenes show men transporting building equipment (some with the use of vehicles and horses), then carried by the men across stoney river beds, fording rivers, climbing with planks on their backs, then showing the various stages of construction. One hut has a rounded roof-line; others made of corrugated iron and wood are situated at different sites, including one up a bare mountain-side, and one with trees behind, and another with a river in front. The collection includes several interior views of huts (nos. 130-134), and close-up pictures of the men. Names pencilled on the back of some of the photographs include F. Hulston, D.V. Apperley, W. Newton, G. Chisholm, M. Barford, John Sampson, J. Moore and R. Drake. Image no. 175 shows the tombstone of Minnie Cochran with the inscription "In memory of Minnie Cochran, d 27th Oct. 1879 and Baby" which was found "nestling under the hawthorn fence by the cattle yards at Mt White".
