Description

The essay is based on the inquest of Catherine Campbell Horton who drowned in the Reefton Electric Power Company water-race on 3 Jul 1891. It traces her life from her childhood in Scotland, her marriage to John Joshua Horton and its breakup, the effect on her and the couple's children and the circumstances at the time of her death. It also details her husband's background prior to coming to New Zealand. He was the electrical engineer at the electric power station in Reefton at the beginning of the first power supply immediately after the introduction in 1888
