- Description
Jennifer Ward-Lealand President of the NZ Actors' Equity union stands in front of a ship laden with containers and says 'It's a bluff', that there is 'no way Warners' are really shipping the Hobbit offshore. They'll sail over the horizon and come back, trust me...' Refers to the impasse that occurred when NZ Actors Equity, with the support of the MEAA and the powerful US Screen Actors Guild, asked all actors to boycott The Hobbit due to stringent contract provisions. There has been a stand-off between the Actors' Union and Peter Jackson over the unionisation of actors during the filming of 'The Hobbit'. CTU president Helen Kelly said discussions with the New Zealand Actors' Equity, which was in alliance with the parent body of Actors Equity NZ, Australian MEAA (Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance), indicated there were a variety of lawful means which could be used to establish the minimum wage, working conditions and residuals for performers on the production. If the stouch is not resolved there is a danger that the filming will go overseas which will lose a lot of money for New Zealand but also jeopardise future film productions for New Zealand.
