Description

A copy of a drawing by John Alexander Gilfillan, dating from the mid-1840s, showing a settlement beside the Whanganui River, with several low whare, a picket fence, a niu pole and a large canoe at the water's edge. The canoe has a mast and furled sail and carved prow and stern. There are several people on the boat and on the shore and pigs near the water's edge. A small dugout canoe is drawn up beside the larger canoe.

Used by Downes as an illustration for his book 'Old Whanganui' (Hawera, 1915)
