- Description
The cartoon shows a row of coffins labelled 'Tunisia', 'Egypt', 'Yemen', 'Algeria', and 'Jordan'. The lid of the 'Tunisia' coffin is broken and a mummified body representing 'democracy' is struggling out of the 'Egypt' coffin. Context - Tunisia's autocratic president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali was forced from power on the 14th January 2011. The contagion of protest has spread across north Africa, from Tunisia to Egypt and beyond. Protests in Egypt began on the 25th January - as yet (1st Feb) President Hosni Mubarak has refused to go.
