Crombie, John Nichol, 1827-1878. Attributed works :Patuone. Brother of the loyal and faithful chief Tamati Waka, uncle of Pomare, who as soon as he saw my portrait immediately recognised the feature and rubbed noses with it at Tottenham. [Between 1855 and 1862].

Patuone, wearing a European suit. He has shark's tooth earrings and is holding a double-barrelled rifle in his hands. His moko shows clearly in the photograph.

Strutt's handwritten note alongside the portrait reads: Pomare's uncle, Patuone. This man, whose photo I have, was brother of the loyal and faithful chief Tamati Waka, uncle to Pomare, who as soon as he saw my portrait immediately recognised the features and rubbed noses with it at Tottenham. Dec. 1863. Mr Hare Pomare & Mrs Pomare. Her christian name was Hariata Tutapuita.
