This photograph was the basis for Strutt's portrait of Patuone in his oil painting 'Hare Pomare and Family' (Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia). See Bell, Leonard. The making of a portrait: William Strutt's Hare Pomare and family, 1863-64, in: Bulletin of New Zealand art history. vol. 6, 1978, pp.31-40
Strutt's handwritten note alongside the portrait reads: Pomare's uncle, Patuone. This man, whose photo I have, was brother of the loyal and faithful chief Tamati Waka, uncle to Pomare, who as soon as he saw my portrait immediately recognised the features and rubbed noses with it at Tottenham.
