Shows a group of houses on the shores of a lake or inlet of the sea. Beyond are several headlands, and there is a range of snow-capped hills in the distance. Two of the houses are two-storied. There is a small jetty with a yacht at the waterfront, and another yacht on the water
Location of the scene is unknown but the background mountains suggest it is likely to be in the lower South Island. Rawson is known to have painted Milford Sound, as well as the Taranaki area. He visited Milford Sound and Jackson Bay aboard a steamer, the S S Wanaka, in the summer of 1877. This may show Jackson Bay
