An early map of the South Island and Stewart Island, drawn to a shape that is unrecognisable, showing Maori placenames of coastal and harbour areas and two lakes. Written on map are comments, including descriptions of the quality of harbours and land, such as 'only fit for boats', 'flat land', 'plenty of seals', 'plenty of whalers huts', and navigators' notes.
Written on sticker on reverse of map: A similar copy is in the possession of Mr Nicholson, Lands & Survey Department (1949)
