Halswell, Edmund Storr, -1874

Judge Halswell. Son of Henry Halswell of Presteign, Radnorshire; admitted to the Middle Temple 1831. Appointed by the New Zealand Company as commissioner of native reserves, and arrived in the "Lady Nugent" in 1841. Left New Zealand about 1845. Description: Shows views in the Wellington area. The top view looks along Petone beach to the south-east, with Petone Pa and the 'Native Chapel' (the large building on the left). The central view, taken from Tinakori Road's junction with Hawkestone Street, looks towards Kelburn. There is a bullock cart in the foreground, and three Maori carrying large bundles. The nearest house, on the lower slopes of Tinakore Hill, is that of Nathaniel Levin, with the house of Mr Holroyd above it, and Mr Dorset's house further in the distance at the foot of the trees that cover the hill. The lowest view at Ohiro Bay (or valley) shows a flock of sheep attended by a shepherd and a large-single storied house nestled against trees, the home of Judge Halswell. Description: According to Brees in his "Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand" p.34: "This view is taken on Section 28 of the Ohiro District, which is a very beautiful spot. If the house should ever be completed as the learned and tasteful owner intended, it will have a truly English appearance ... the section is moderately hilly and the soil good." Shows flock of sheep with shepherd in foreground, large house set back against bush-clad hills. The flatter ground in the foreground has been cleared for grazing. Description: A two-storied house in a large cleared section, with a bush-clad hill behind it. The home of Mrs Jane Symons (nee Morshead), later Mrs J. F. F. Wright. The house was originally built by Judge Halswell and managed by James Symons, then purchased by Symons, who died in 1851. The same house was also depicted by S. C. Brees in the early 1840s (Residence of his Honour Judge Halswell ... No. 61). It stood on Section 28, Ohiro, approximately the modern site of Brooklyn School in Washington Avenue, Brooklyn.
