Description

Journal or reminiscences in three parts: My travels to New Zealand as a soldier, My travels in New Zealand, My travels in New Zealand and home again. Contains full account of life in the ranks, including training, equipment, rations and discipline. Also describes shipboard life on the `Nelson' and `Percy', and gives impressions of Maori.

Brier enlisted in British Army in 1864 and was sent out to New Zealand on the `Nelson' as a reinforcement to the 68th Durham Light Infantry. He saw service in Tauranga, Pukehina and Auckland before sailing back to England in 1866 on the `Percy'.
