Description

Shows Prime Minister, Helen Clark sitting on a large beached whale that represents the Foreshore and Seabed Bill. From one direction comes a crowd of 'Save the whalers' carrying buckets of seawater and from the other a crowd of Maori holding knives and axes and shouting 'taunga' [treasure]. The whale looks a bit grim. Relates to differing perceptions about the place of the foreshore and seabed in the lives of New Zealanders and also the differing ways in which whales are prized by environmentalists and Maori whalebone carvers.
