- Description
Shows a pukeko on a teacher's mortar board, using a pointer and a blackboard to teach the message of care to prevent forest fires. Its pupils are a kiwi in checked shorts, a kingfisher and a rabbit, while a tui and a fantail watch from above. The setting is a native forest with kowhai flowers and ferns. The blackboard is propped on a easel carved with Maori motifs.
The State Forest Service was issuing various warnings to trampers and cigarette smokers during the 1940s, particularly in newspapers for 1948.
The State Forest Service was renamed the New Zealand Forest Service in December 1949, so this poster predates the change. It is unlikely to have been made before 1940 although the State Forest Service was operating in the 1920s.
