21 letters. These include letters written from just after her arrival in Christchurch (from Auckland) in Mar 1859 with her husband Captain John McLean and her sister Lille Mudie, up until Dec 1876 (by which time she had four children and had become a widow). The letters written 1859-1861 are signed Jessie A Maclean, whereas those written after John's death in 1871 are signed Jessie McLean. The latter series of letters concern her financial affairs and education of her eldest son Alexander. Includes a draft letter from Donald McLean to Jessie dated 25 Oct 1872
Captain John McLean (younger brother of Donald McLean) died on 7 December 1871. He was thrown from his gig as he arrived at Winchmore (near Ashburton) and was killed instantly
