Eldest son of Captain John McLean (1827-1871) and Jessie (née Mudie). Nephew of Sir Donald McLean and cousin to R D D Maclean. Born ca 1862, and believed to have drowned en route to Australia aged 24. Educated privately, and later at Lincoln College (paid for by his cousin Douglas Maclean). Took up farming in South Canterbury with his younger brother Donald.

The letters written 1859-1861 are signed Jessie A Maclean, whereas those written after John's death in 1871 are signed Jessie McLean. The latter series of letters concern her financial affairs and education of her eldest son Alexander. Includes a draft letter from Donald McLean to Jessie dated 25 Oct 1872 Captain John McLean (younger brother of Donald McLean) died on 7 December 1871.
