Description

Group at the digging of the first sod for the Main Trunk Railway. They stand at the confiscation line at the southern bank of the Puniu River, 15 April 1885. Standing at the right, addressing the gathering, is Rewi Maniapoto. He is wearing a top hat and black jacket. The tall man wearing a top hat, standing in the centre behind the barrow, is Wahanui Huatare. Photograph taken 15 April 1885 by Daniel Manders Beere.

Identified as "Digging of 1st sod M.T. Railway at Te Awamutu." from typescript of photographer's negative register held at TL 6/1/62.

Further information about this occasion is held at the Appendix to the jounals of the House of Representatives, 1885, D-6.
