A rocky seafront with a faint indication of the palisades of a pa and of pa buildings on the left and the mountains of the South Island visible across the sea.
The title: Paraoa-nui, near Pencarrow, Port Nicholson, 1865 comes from the title on a very similar watercolour in Auckland Museum; however the position of Tapuaenuku and the other South Island peak over Cook Strait, and the presence of a substantial pa, (not mentioned by early travellers on the path from Eastbourne to the Wairarapa via Pencarrow) may suggest that this view is from Oteranga Bay, south of Cape Terawhiti, according to Mr Frank Fitzgerald, historian of the Eastbourne area.
