Description

David Lumsden, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, emigrated to Australia in 1889 on the `Tainui'. After two years prospecting at Coolgardie he came onto New Zealand in 1891. He was employed in Hawkes Bay until enlisting for the South African War. On his return he farmed at Kuripapango from 1906 until his untimely death in 1928. He married Marion Olsen in 1911 and the couple had a family of four sons and one daughter. From 1918 to 1921 the family lived at Mangateretere. The essay tells of David's desire for land, his years of toil and determination to conquer nature and his struggles for survival. It tells of the isolation of Kuripapango, the lack of schooling and the primitive living conditions the family had to contend with.
