Description

Shows Fort Richmond, a group of voluntary militia on a road, and the Hutt River with a canoe

As the fort was not constructed (under the direction of Captain Compton of Lower Hutt) until 1845 and Brees left Wellington in 1845, this work must have been painted in that year. The 58th Regiment occupied the fort immediately after it had been completed in April 1845. The soldiers shown are militia, civilian volunteers, identifiable from their mixture of red and blue uniforms.

Not reproduced as engraving in Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847), although another view of the fort is shown as Plate 10, no.33. Brees' text on page 22 of Pictorial Illustrations gives considerable details about the plan and cost of the fort.

Inscriptions: Backing board recto - Opened 1844. The view is taken looking down the stream & shows Fort Richmond, it was constructed under the direction of [blank]. Johnston, 33 Central Tce. [20th century inscriptions in pencil. Backing board now discarded]
