Shows a small wooden building, displaying the sign `The Eldorado', in an isolated area in Central Otago. The building is viewed from the opposite side of the road. It has a verandah and a slab chimney
A related watercolour by Hodgkins is in the Otago Settlers' Museum, 'The old Eldorado grog shanty on the Waipori Road' dated 1868 or 1869. The OSM watercolour appears to show the building at a slightly later state, with two brick chimneys, viewed from a different angle. The hotel, established by 1862, was on an isolated stretch of road between Waipori and Mahinerangi, Central Otago. It was used by goldminers heading to Gabriel's Gully and back to Dunedin. It was held up by robbers in 1863, when in the ownership of Archibald and Joan Walker.
