Head and shoulders portraits, apparently of a young Maori woman (on the left) and of a Maori man. Both have ear adornments and hair in a topknot and the man on the right has a flax garment beneath his chest. The figure on the left is mistakenly described as female and was actually a male.
Piron visited New Zealand in 1793 under the command of Bruny d'Entrecasteaux. No women came out to the ships during the brief visit, so the engraver's assumption that the left-hand figure is a woman is mistaken.
The image is a re-engraved and reversed version of that published in the French edition in 1800
