A West Coast miner puts his head on the block waiting for the axe of the Pike River mining Company in the guise of Santa Claus to behead him - the bowl awaiting his head represents 'jobs'. Context; Pike River Coal is expected to announce this week a four-week notice period for redundancy for up to 90 of its staff. Its workers have been bracing for job losses ever since the November 19 explosion at the mine, which claimed the lives of 29 of their colleagues. Grey District mayor Tony Kokshoorn is travelling to Wellington on Wednesday to meet with Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee and is hoping to come away with a rescue plan that will ensure miners made redundant by Pike River Coal can get other jobs on the coast within the mineral industry.
