Diary covers period 5 Jul 1865 when the party left Christchurch to 16 Aug when an ascent was made to the top of the Pass. Details the activities of members of the party including a fatal shooting (of Joseph Trounce) and daily progress of survey work.
Diary appears to be incomplete.

Accompanying material - Letter dated 14 Dec 1865, posted from Hawford near Christchurch to `My Dear Arthur', in same hand but unsigned, containing more information about the journey.

Newbery, a Canterbury farmer and provincial government agent, participated in this expedition, which was contracted by the Canterbury Provincial Government to survey and lay-off a road to the West Coast goldfields via Browning's Pass.
Survey party was led by John Samuel Browning and Arthur Dudley Dobson.
