Date: 28 Sep 1863-5 Mar 1864

By: Bain, Robert Preston, 1825-1894

Reference: Micro-MS-0805

Description: Account of a surveying expedition to the Jacksons Bay area, ending with an overland journey from Martins Bay to Lake Wakatipu, via Lake McKerrow, and the Hollyford and Greenstone Valleys, then to Queenstown and Dunedin, via the Dunstan Road. Having chartered the schooner `Fawn', the party set out from Port Chalmers, making its way northward and through Cook Strait. The party went ashore at Ship Cove in Queen Charlotte Sound. The vessel then rounded Capes Farewell and Foulwind and landed the surveying party at Jacksons Bay. Account includes mention of parties of goldminers in the area, having been dropped off by vessels `Nugget' (p3) and `Courier' (p4), six miners from the `Courier' joining Bain's party; also visit to Claude Ollivier's grave (p3); meeting with miner Thomas Watson and his account of the drowning of his mining partner, Henry Cowell (p7); dropped supplies for Dr James Hector's party (p3); refers to drowning of crew member of the `Pryde' (ie `Pride of the Huron'), Thomas Davis, and his burial (p11); William Arthur's (Otago Provincial Chief Surveyor) camp (pp11-12) and von Tunzelman's Station on the shores of Lake Wakatipu (p12). Besides surveying the coast from Awarua Point to Abut Head, the party also explored the Jackson and Waiototo Rivers and surrounding areas. Account also refers to two members of the party as `Jones', who narrowly escaped death in a fall, and `Blackmore', who retrieved Davis' body from the Arawhata River, but they are not further identified. This typed transcript seems to have been made from Bain's signed holograph report held at the Canterbury Museum Archives. This document is on blue lined foolscap paper, originally tied but now bound in maroon buckram.
