Description

The cartoon shows the Co-leader of the Green Party Russel Norman sitting up to his neck in a box of Chinese takeaways with a pair of chopsticks poked through his head and protruding from each ear. The box is labelled 'Sweet'n'sour' and has a little signpost planted in the food that reads 'Chinese Trade'. Refers to Russel Norman's protest against the treatment of Tibet by China which resulted in a Tibetan flag being torn from his hands by a member of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping's entourage when the president arrived at Parliament. The incident raised valid questions about the right of "free speech" in New Zealand, which arose from a protest involving visits from Chinese officials. China is extremely sensitive to supporters of the Chinese "occupation" of Tibet and to the Falun Gong movement and protests usually trigger strong reactions. The police decided that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate a prosecution of the Chinese officials who manhandled Dr Norman.
