Description

Diary kept by Morris aboard the `City of Dunedin' on its voyage from London to Port Chalmers. It includes some entries (written in pencil) by his wife Marina (`Min'). Morris and his family which comprised his wife, six children and servant, travelled in the chief cabin. The account describes daily shipboard life on the vessel, the progress of the ship, weather conditions and storms. He recounts the marine and bird life, comments on fellow passengers and crew (including Mr Cooper who became insane during the latter part of the voyage), the passing of other ships and sailing off the coast of South America. Occasionally there is mention of Morris assisting the ship's doctor as Morris had some previous medical training. An appendix to the diary includies sea shanties from Mr Williams, 2nd Mate of the ship and the daily run of the ship copied from the Log of the Chief Officer.
