Description

Frontal view of a standing male figure in ceremonial mourning dress including headgear and mask, with a clapper in his right hand, a shark-toothed club in his left.

Joppien / Smith number for this drawing is 3.112. There is a similar but more finished drawing in the British Library (Add. MS 15513, f.18). An engraved version appeared in Ellis' Narrative (1782) Vol 1, fp, p. 130 titled A man of Otaheitee in a mourning dress..
