The diary describes the latter part of Jane Olding's voyage to New Zealand on the `Aorangi' and gives her first impressions of life in the Kuripapango district. At the back of the diary are several pages of newspaper clippings. Also included is a transcript of the diary by Eliza Fielder in 1886? and Marsha Donaldson in 1989.

Jane Olding sailed from London to Auckland on the `Aorangi', disembarking at Napier Nov 1885. She joined her brother, Robert Batley on his farm 56 kilometres past Kuripapango on the Napier-Taihape road, at "Moawhanga" [Moawhango].
