Marlborough Council - election. 13 October 2010
- Date
- 2010
- Reference
- DCDL-0015916
- Description
The cartoon shows logs in Shakespeare Bay that represent the 'Marlborough Council'. A huge hose pours bromide gas that represents the 'election' over the logs. Bugs holding an 'anti-gas' poster fly through holes into the log and others fly out coughing and sneezing. Refers to the controversy over the use of methyl bromide as a fumigant in the logging industry in Shakespeare Bay in Picton. Erma says in its decision on methyl bromide that it is a broad-scale fumigant used internationally and in New Zealand. What it doesn't say is that the European Union has banned it and other countries are also phasing it out. Much of the impetus to ban the gas comes not from the substance's toxicity but because it depletes the ozone layer.
