Shows a sailor in a hammock watching a Maori couple building a fire; other Maori are in a canoe in the background.

Second state. Includes inscription 'Paris, Drouart, Imp. R. du Fouare, 11', lower centre beneath image, above title. This inscription not present on first state
The image is derived from an illustration in A. D. d'Orbigny's Voyage pittoresque dans les deux Ameriques (Paris, Tenre et Dupuy, 1836) (or Paris, Furne, 1841). Plate 4, engraved by Beyer after Louis de Sainson is titled Campement dans les Forets de la Guyane and shows a European in a hammock to the left, with two native inhabitants of Guyana cooking in the lower right. Other details of the Guyanan print do not match this view in which details of clothing, tattooing, etc, are generic Polynesian, rather than Maori
