View looking south towards Kapiti Island from near the mouth of the Ohau and Waikawa Rivers, with two Maori and a Pakeha cooking over a fire, logs on the beach and three Maori with a dog in the distance. A small outline in the sea in the distance between Kapiti and the distant headland may be Mana Island

Location of original watercolour: State Library of Victoria, reference number H83.50/9. The watercolour includes an inscription, bottom centre, with the word 'Mana' (i.e. Mana Island) visible. Two shallow rowboats are drawn up on the beach to the right, with several groups of about a dozen European men in the foreground and part-way down the beach. Logs washed up on the beach are as shown in the engraving. Mana Island appears to be visible in the far distance, just off the headland and to the left of Kapiti
