Standing full-length portrait of a Māori-Pakeha boy, probably the son of a whaler, in the Dunedin area. The child has a red Phrygian-style cap on his head, a blanket round his shoulders and a skirt.
The associated text for this image mentions that 'Johnny is an engaging child that I saw with Tiaroa's [Taiaroa's] tribe at Otago. There are several half-castes at this pah and among them two interesting girls'.
