Description: A group of Maori in front of a tent shelter. The group includes two seated women, one breast-feeding an infant, a naked toddler reclining in front and two young men standing behind, one with a rifle and cartridge case. A tewhatewha (weapon) lied in fron on top of a pile of cloaks. A third woman kneelds to the right, her back to the artist and her face hidden. According to Oliver's accompanying text, the scene is at Kororareka (modern Russell) in 1851, during the feast (hakari) put on by Tamati Waka Nene for Governor George Grey. 'The man on the right with the musket is Neddy, who fought against us under Heki [Hone Heke] at Ruapekapeka. The girl next to him is Maria ... the woman with the baby is said to be the daughter of Chevalier Dillon; and on the left is Jane, who was famous for her personal attractions ... Description: Shows a full-length portrait of Maori chief Te Rangihaeata, in a feather or fur cloak over the top of a woven blanket with decorative border. He carries a greenstone patu in his right hand. Deframed by the Library. Fragments attached to backing board include a framing label from the Imperial Art Studio, Grey Street, Gisborne, with an art nouveau border. Also included is a label for the Missionary Exhibition, Maori Court. This may indicate that the work was displayed at the East & West Missionary Exhibiiton in Wellington in 1923, or the East & West Missionary Exhibition in Auckland in 1926, or a similar exhibition. The owner of the work at the time of the exhibition was Mrs C Birch of Bond Street, Marton.. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Physical Description: Handcoloured lithograph, cropped to 428 x 320 mm.

Description: Shows three women, two of them older and sitting on the ground in front of a hut. One smokes a pipe. The third, a younger woman, is standing between them. She wears a blue and white-striped top (possibly a sailor's clothing), and is wrapped in a red blanket. She also wears a knotted scarf around her neck, and a garland of flowers around her head. All three women have facial moko. On the ground in front of them lie a gourd, kete, an axe and a tewhatewha. The scene is possibly set in the Hauraki district Possibly the same woman who appears in Oliver's 'Inside the stockade with natives outside', ca 1850, and who wears virtally the same attire of striped shirt, red blanket and knotted scarf (B-089-001). The child has a red Phrygian-style cap on his head, a blanket round his shoulders and a skirt. The associated text for this image mentions that 'Johnny is an engaging child that I saw with Tiaroa's [Taiaroa's] tribe at Otago. The associated text for this image mentions that Harry Bluff is probably the son of a whaler and that he spends much time with his grandfather, Pokene. 'Harry, I fear is receiving but an indifferent education, going about with a doting old grandfather, Pokene, and has already learnt to play cards and smoke a pipe, while his interesting manners and appearance obtain many a sixpence, which is shared between them. Palm trees, hills and bush beyond the houses. The attribution to R. A. Clive appears to be the lithographer's error for R. A. Oliver's name. The associated text for this image mentions the strategic advantages of New Caledonia.
