Description

Most photographs taken by "CR", probably James Ring's son, James Claude Ring.

The whole album consists of views of a state visit to the West Coast area by Premier Richard John Seddon in 1906, and includes views of his arrival on the first train for the opening of the extension to Lake Mahinapua of the Hokitika-Ross Railway Line in January 1906, with large gatherings of people, and a view of Seddon deliviering his address.

At the beginning of the album scenes show his arrival by boat at Greymouth, followed by scenes along a route to Kokatahi, with a large party of dignitaries travelling by coach and horseback. Many views show the group fording wide rivers; with scenes of welcome by roadmen, miners, old identities and local farmers at various homes and towns. One view shows members of the party gathering rata.

A deputation of men is seen at the residence of Sam Fergurson (Ferguson, farmer at Waitaha (near Mt Hercules)); a large party at Gunn's (Alex Gunn, proprietor of an accommodation house and Post Office at Wataroa (Whataroa)); a group of old identities gathered at The Waiho; a group of roadmen at the Mt. Hercules road; and scenes of a reception for Seddon held at Kumara.

A series of photographs show the touring party on the Francis Joseph Glacier (Franz Josef Glacier).
