Railways album 6

Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Official occasions include scenes of the Empire and Australian Farmers' Tour, a view of the cortege at Sir Joseph Ward's funeral outside Parliament Buildings, the opening of Massey Memorial, and various views of unidentified railway officials in personal and group portraits, including one of the members of the New Zealand Railway Commission. Description: Printed copies of Hugh Leggatt's transcriptions of journals written by South African Methodist minister Edward Dunstan, chronicling his family’s holiday to New Zealand (via Australia) from 14 September 1938 - 23 March 1939. The transcriptions are illustrated with digitised copies of his mother's photographs, newspaper clippings, and pages from Dunstan's original journal. Leggatt wrote an introductory passage that provides background information on the holiday and the transcription project. Book one (14 September 1938 – 12 December 1938), covers the voyage from Rustenburg, South Africa with stopovers in Australia, and the family’s travels throughout the North Island. Book two (14 December 1938 - 23 March 1939), covers the family’s travel throughout the South Island, and their return home to South Africa. Also included are printed documents pertaining to the creation of the transcriptions of Edward Dunstan’s travel diaries. Included is background information on the Dunstan family and the holiday to New Zealand in 1938-1939, a transcription of Edward Dunstan’s obituary published in the ‘Minutes of the South African Methodist Conference’, 1961, and a printed typescript of a letter from Wendy Dunstan (daughter of Edward) to her boyfriend in South Africa regarding walking the Milford Track and flooding on the road to Dunedin. Description: Photographs of the West Coast, with particular emphasis on bridges, gold mining activities, towns, and roads. Photographers mostly unidentified, but two definitely taken by John Tait (p 9-10), and one possibly taken by James Ring (p 20; identified from same photograph in different collection (PA7-51-05)). The bridges include Hungerfords Bridge and Thompson's Bridge, both over the Arahura River, and the Upper Bridge in the Otira Gorge. There is also a view of the Kaniere [i.e. Kanieri] punt for crossing the river. Views of gold mining and mining towns include the Hohonu Water Race Company's flume at Greenstone; the Great Western Company's fluming at Kaniere [i.e. Kanieri]; mining towns at Donoghues and Redman's; Ross; Goldsborough; the Kohinoor claim; and Napoleon Hill, Ahaura, showing various businesses along a narrow street including the Casino de Venise, Baillie Bootmaker, Scandinavian Hotel and the Victoria & Sydney Hotel. A number of views of Hokitika include the town from various angles; Dobson's Memorial (to roading engineer George Dobson who was murdered in 1866); the cemetery with a view of Archibald Bonar Junior's tombstone; the Old Post Office; the Hokitika Wharf; "cutting through the sandspit, Hokitika Bar, Sunday morning 1867"; and the Hokitika River with vessels ashore in 1866. Ring album 2

Description: Most photographs taken by "CR", probably James Ring's son, James Claude Ring. The whole album consists of views of a state visit to the West Coast area by Premier Richard John Seddon in 1906, and includes views of his arrival on the first train for the opening of the extension to Lake Mahinapua of the Hokitika-Ross Railway Line in January 1906, with large gatherings of people, and a view of Seddon deliviering his address. At the beginning of the album scenes show his arrival by boat at Greymouth, followed by scenes along a route to Kokatahi, with a large party of dignitaries travelling by coach and horseback. Many views show the group fording wide rivers; with scenes of welcome by roadmen, miners, old identities and local farmers at various homes and towns. One view shows members of the party gathering rata. A deputation of men is seen at the residence of Sam Fergurson (Ferguson, farmer at Waitaha (near Mt Hercules)); a large party at Gunn's (Alex Gunn, proprietor of an accommodation house and Post Office at Wataroa (Whataroa)); a group of old identities gathered at The Waiho; a group of roadmen at the Mt. Hercules road; and scenes of a reception for Seddon held at Kumara. A series of photographs show the touring party on the Francis Joseph Glacier (Franz Josef Glacier).
