Description

A group of Maori performing a haka underneath a large tree to the right

From Malerische Reise um die Welt, derived from engravings after Louis De Sainson, who in turn derived his work from his own earlier engravings and drawings, from the drawings of Louis Lejeune and from the illustrations to Cook's voyages. Malerische Reise um die Welt was the German translation of Dumont d'Urville's 1834 publication Voyage pittoresque autour du monde.

A redrawing by Sainson of his original drawing and watercolour, published as a lithograph in 1833, 'Baie Houahoua. Naturels executant une danse a bord de l'Astrolabe'. The image is reversed compared with the version in Voyage pittoresque autour du monde
