Shows Manners Street looking towards the path up the hill that later became Boulcott Street, with the brick chapel and Rev. Samuel Ironside's mission house on the left and Mr Brewer's house on the right of the street. Bethune and Hunter's cattle yards are on the extreme right, with a trench and mound shown, built after the Wairau Affray of 1843 in case of attack on Wellington. The Theatre is is the distance and the Bank Hotel to the right in the background (Information from Ward, L. "Early Wellington", p.263, and from Brees, S C. "Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand" 1847)
Engraving no 38 in Brees' "Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand" published London, 1847. Watercolour original held in unknown private collection with black and white photo held by the Library, neg 1/1-017870, titled Pipitea Point and Pa, Wellington.
In his text to "Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand" Brees notes, in addition to the information recorded above: "The Wesleyan chapel at Te Aro ... [is] 39 feet wide and 48 feet long. Mr Robert Stokes finished the design of the building ... the walls are formed of brickwork 18 inches thick. The chapel was opened for service in December 1844, under the ministry of the Rev S Ironside."
The chapel was destroyed in the earthquake of 1848.
The Library has a black and white copy of the original watercolour on which this engraving was based, owner unknown, neg 1/2-024745-F, title "Wesleyan mission house and chapel"
