Two hobbits sit over their glasses of ale in their hobbit house. One of them complains about being underpaid and overworked and now having to pay extra GST on his tobacco and ale and the other tells him that at least he is short and hairy enough to have a job. Refers to the rise in GST from 12.5% to 15% on 1st October. Refers also to the start of work on the Peter Jackson production of 'The hobbit', for which they are looking for 'short and hairy' as well as tall actors, which has led to a stand-off between the Actors' Union and Peter Jackson over the unionisation of actors during the filming of 'The Hobbit'. CTU president Helen Kelly said discussions with the New Zealand Actors' Equity, which was in alliance with the parent body of Actors Equity NZ, Australian MEAA (Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance), indicated there were a variety of lawful means which could be used to establish the minimum wage, working conditions and residuals for performers on the production. If the stouch is not resolved there is a danger that the filming will go overseas which will lose a lot of money for New Zealand but also jeopardise future film productions for New Zealand.
