Description

Sarah's reminiscences, written in the 1870s, commence in 1840 with a two month separation from her husband Felton who left her in Sydney to take up the position of acting Surveyor-General in new Zealand. She recalls her journey to new Zealand on the Westminster and arrival at Kororareka on 17 Mar. She describes accompanying Felton on an expedition to select a site for the site of government, and their eventual transfer to the chosen site on the Waitemata. Sarah recalls the growth of Auckland from their original tents to the building of houses, shops and the first church. Also described is a journey with Governor Hobson to Wellington and Akaroa, and explorations around Auckland, which included climbing the highest peak on Rangitoto Island. In 1844 Sarah and Felton left for England where Felton was offered the post of Postmaster General and Chief Police Magistrate in Auckland. On their return they found the position had been filled and, disappointed and unwell, Felton decided to return to England. Sarah's account ends with his death at Lima on 26 Nov 1847
